California Department of Public Health Fines 7 Healthcare Facilities for Breach of Privacy

November 23rd, 2010

The California Department of Public Health has levied fines and penalties totaling $792,500 against six hospitals and one nursing home under state laws that protect the privacy of patients’ medical records.

The infractions among the facilities varied, but generally involved failure to prevent unauthorized access and disclosure of patient’s private medical information by facility employees.  In one instance, a hospital was cited for failing to prevent the theft of patient information.

These facilities are required to submit a plan of correction designed to prevent future breaches to the CDPH within ten working days.  The facilities can also request an appeal.

For more information, see the CDPH Press Release.
