BCBSNC Withdraws Controversial Physicians’ Contract Addendum
December 8th, 2009
American Medical News (11/25, Berry) reports that BCBS of North Carolina has backed away from a contract addendum it sent to physicians in September,” but it is “unclear whether a new draft will assuage physician concerns.” According to a letter the North Carolina Medical Society and several other groups sent to Insurance Commissioner Wayne Goodwin, the addendum “said the Blues could change doctors’ fee schedules” at will and that “doctors would be terminated…if they objected.” NCMS spokesperson Mike Edwards said the society was told BCBSNC “withdrew its original addendum, and that Goodwin, the Blues and the medical society were searching for a meeting date to discuss details of the new draft.” In an email, Blues Spokesperson Kimberley Colvin said BCBSNC “has amended” its provider contracts “to ensure compliance” with provisions of a new contracting law set to take effect Jan. 1.
