NCDOI Fines United HealthCare $800K, Enters Settlement

September 18th, 2008

State Insurance Commissioner Jim Long has announced that the NC Department of Insurance (NCDOI) has entered into a settlement agreement with two United HealthCare companies, United HealthCare Insurance Company and United HealthCare of North Carolina, Inc. As part of the agreement, the companies will pay $786,655.87 in fines.

The North Carolina action in many respects mirrors a 39-state multi-state agreement with United, under which numerous issues related to claims payment, appeals and operations were addressed. NCDOI did not participate in this agreement, stating that they preferred to reserve the right to take direct regulatory action.
