Doctors Surrender Licenses Pending Investigations by N.C. Medical Board
August 6th, 2007
A doctor in Charlotte and one in Shelby have voluntarily surrendered their licenses to the N.C. Medical Board while the board conducts investigations into their practices. The doctors are James McGhee, 54, formerly a family practitioner with Carolina Medical Associates on Pineville-Matthews Road in Charlotte, and Kevin O’Dell, 50, formerly an emergency medicine specialist with Cleveland Regional Medical Center in Shelby.
Citing restrictions in state law, medical board officials would not confirm that investigations are ongoing. But the board’s definition of a “voluntary surrender,” published on its Web site, is that a doctor relinquishes authority to practice “pending or during an investigation.” A voluntary surrender does not prevent the board from issuing charges against the doctor later. McGhee, who has been licensed in North Carolina since 1994, surrendered his license July 23. O’Dell, licensed since 1990, surrendered his license July 25.
