July 16, 2007 Physician Deadline to Delete Provider Data from NPI Database

July 17th, 2007

Health care provider data changes, updates, and deletions must be submitted electronically or on paper no later than July 16, 2007 to be reflected in the initial downloadable file and NPI Registry now scheduled to be available on August 1, 2007. Information that MAY BE AVAILABLE dependent upon the data category where it was reported includes: Social Security Number, Taxpayer Identification Number, other personal identification number, and home address.

CMS has published a document that will assist providers in making updates, changes, and deletions to the FOIA-disclosable NPPES provider data. The document is entitled, “National Plan and Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) Data Elements – Data Dissemination – Information for Providers” and is available at www.cms.hhs.gov. To update and delete “optional” data elements from your application, access your application by using your established UserID and passwords at https://nppes.cms or contact the NPI Enumerator at 1-800-465-3203.

As provider and payer transaction partners will need adequate information to ensure proper NPI usage on claims, healthcare providers are strongly encouraged to consider allowing continued access to as many data elements as feasible especially including UPIN and business address zip code + 4.
